Payment in China can be a major hassle in China if you don’t bring cash. And although most Chinese have a seamless payment experiences with Alipay and WeChat payment solutions, as a foreigner it is still a lot easier and anonymous with cash. Alipay’s new Tourpass feature makes it possible for a foreigner to store a deposit of local currency in your phone, after charging a foreign credit card, and submitting a photo of your passport. This can be used to pay shops. However, the money cannot be transferred to other people, you cannot give red envelopes, and there are several restrictions on your account. Since the user interface treats Tour Pass as an extra feature instead of the only feature available for foreigners, the whole user experience is confusing. There is a high risk you’ll end up not being able to pay at the checkout counter as the payment solution is very confusing and often affected by slow networks. So for now, as a foreigner, stick to cash.
