Description

Ready to take your Japanese reading and listening comprehension to the next level? Welcome to Satori Reader.

COMPELLING STORIES
Read from a growing library of engrossing stories written by native speakers for intermediate students, across genres such as fantasy, slice-of-life, thrillers, documentaries, news, and more.

AUDIO
Tap any sentence to hear it read aloud by native voice actors (no robots!).

ADAPTIVE KANJI USAGE
Crack the chicken-and-egg problem of reading kanji with our unique presentation engine, which adjusts the Japanese text to accommodate your actual knowledge. This allows you to challenge yourself for the kanji you should know without being overwhelmed by what you don't.

SMART DEFINITIONS
Tap any word for a definition. This is more than just an automated lookup. Satori Reader shows the actual sense of each word as it's being used in the sentence. For example, the particle の has many uses: it can indicate possession; it can turn the preceding verb or phrase into a noun; it can stand in for another word; and more. We show you exactly what is happening in every instance of every word.

FRIENDLY ANNOTATIONS
Gray underlines indicate longer annotations that break down tricky expressions, provide cultural background, or help you to read between the lines. Our editors work hard to anticipate what might be confusing and proactively help you to make sense of things. Good-bye, confusion. Hello, clarity!

SPACED REPETITION SYSTEM (SRS)
The built-in spaced repetition review system helps you to build your vocabulary. Create review cards instantly as you read. Each card you create takes along a snapshot of the sentence in which you encountered the word, further helping to cement it in your memory. You can even play back the audio of that sentence while reviewing the word!

HUMAN FEEDBACK
Still confused about something? Just ask in the comment section below each article. Knowledgeable staff are ready to help.

Satori Reader is built by a team that cares. Our goal is to bring satori (enlightenment) into your Japanese reading life. Set up a free account today, and let's get started.

A brilliant app!

Nick in London on

Perfect for developing reading skills and vocabulary. Helpful explanations and well written material.

Absolutely fantastic

Maosao on

This is exactly what I was looking for. There’s so much that I can do with just this one app - reading of course but also listening, vocabulary, grammar review, sentence mining and so much more. I have the paid version and it’s so worth it.

Shows great promise

SasaPK on

I’m currently loving this app, it’s great to be able to hear Japanese read by a native and relisten line by line as needed, be able to look up any word or sentence and get helpful explanations. It was your short horror story that sucked me in and I’m hoping more like that will come. I’ve barely scratched the surface of what’s there yet, but I’m hoping to find (or hoping you’ll add) some LGBT relevant content at some point. It would be great to have some diverse topics covered. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing how it evolves.

Real Added Value

rod46934 on

Real added value compared with basic automated dictionary because a translation is provided and grammar notes as well as professional voice acting unlike AI automated lesser solutions. Downside is of course the price and news material is outdated.

Great learning app

Martinnmcm on

Interesting and varied content, good facilities to match reading to knowledge of kanji, the lessons so far have been exactly the right size for an evening study for a busy person. Good context notes and discussion group facilities.

Outstanding Japanese learning resource

Shatov72 on

I find the combination of interesting articles, with informative notes, alongside an easy to use flash card system to make this a really good resource for learning Japanese. I wish I knew of similarly good English learning resources to recommend to my students. Reading is very important for improving your vocabulary range, and the articles in Satori Reader are graded to allow intermediate learners to build up their vocabulary, while the numerous informative notes help them to not feel too overwhelmed. There is a good range of Japanese used, from formal Japanese in news articles through to very informal in personal diaries. I’m learning a lot of words from these articles that I wouldn’t find in a textbook, and encountering the words in context helps me to understand them more easily. All the articles have professionally recorded audio files too, helping you to improve your listening skills as well as your reading skills. I think this app is excellent, and highly recommend it for Japanese learners. For beginners, there are several series of beginners Japanese in situations such as train stations and hospitals - but you will need further study to reach a slightly higher level to get the most out of this app. If you use an app like Duolingo to establish a good foundation in Japanese grammar, this app would be a good next step after that.

Really good and decently priced

Writer's app on

It’s like Todai except it offers full stories instead of news when you pay. The free version allows you to read the first few chapters to see if you like the stories and setup. It’s a very good app with real voices to help improve your reading and listening. I recommend it greatly to those looking to improve their kanji familiarity. It offers srs to remember new words but I don’t use it as I use a different app for that. It offers conversation based chapters as well for more real life based conversation. It offers informal conversation within the stories as well. They have interesting stories (something for everyone in my opinion) and offer really good explanations. The app could really use a search feature to search for particular stories i.e spooky however it doesn’t have enough stories yet to benefit from it yet. I look forward to them adding way more stories however there needs to be a way of informing users that new stories are coming. In short: a great app that adjust to your knowledge and great to supplement any style of learning you chose to pursue!

Reading comprehension

ruthieblueuk on

Nice selection of stories - fact and fiction. Great notes on grammar and vocabulary from moderators of this app.

Highly recommended

NeenJin on

Very well designed app, all you need is there: interesting stories at your level, the ability to import the kanji you currently know, excellent translations and grammar explanations! You can also save words/phrases you don’t know and revise them later. I had been looking for a long time for something at my level to read that is not children’s books and I have now found it! Please add more stories and thank you for your effort.

Context: No need to look at the dictionary!

Gregmoon on

This app will help anyone bridging the gap between learning the foundations of Japanese reading (potentially speaking) and listening (after learning foundation Kanji, Hiragana & Katakana), putting it all into context, without the need to keep flipping to your dictionary to work out what a specific kanji is, or which one of its many readings/meanings the word is. This fills in the nuance and subtle differences that no dictionary will teach you. The meaning descriptions are one tap away. This is worth the subscription to bridge the gap and send you comfortably into Japan's social relationships, business or pleasure.
