My SmartBike FAQ
Is My SmartBike free?
Yes, My SmartBike is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is My SmartBike legit?
🤔 The My SmartBike app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
I’ve started using this app now that watch integration has been added, but a couple of things:
Calories burned is not being sent to Strava (which is linked to Apple Activity and hoeing 0 calories burned)
The lock works, but when you unlock it doesn’t always enable e-bike assistance again. I had to lock and unlock a couple of times before I got the assistance back again. On the app it showed me changing levels, but Watts remained at 0 and pedalling was all me!
There’s an error on the unlock message - it looks like the header of the message has been changed but not the body - it reads:
EBike successfully unlocked
Your Ebike's assistance is now disabled. For the optimum experience, please remember that the app relies on an active connection to the Ebike and to the internet for unlocking.
Developers - I’ve filmed the lack of assistance and taken a screenshot of the message. If you want a copy, please reply with an email address and I’ll send over
Another Year on - and Still complete rubbish!
1 year later (May ‘24) … and this app is still complete rubbish and unfit for purpose. I wouldn’t use it if I didn’t have to, but the system on my bike appears to require it. To be fair, there was an interim update which gave me a legible battery %age, then another update screwed it up again! I now have to dig into the engineering data to find my battery %age, and scroll down through acres of weeny print.
I’m using the iPhone SE 2nd gen I had when I bought the bike. This should be fully supported.
So much for listening to feedback:
1) the app periodically logs you out, and you’re stuffed if you’re off-grid (wilderness biking, remember?) and then can’t get into the app.
2) it’s still random what data the app retains between log-ons/bike connections.
I ONLY WANT ONE THING - MY BATTERY LEVEL DISPLAYED SIMPLY, CLEARLY, ACCURATELY AND RELIABLY ON THE TOP LEVEL DISPLAY WHENEVER AND WHEREVER I WANT IT ON A DEVICE THAT WAS CURRENT WHEN I BOUGHT THE BIKE! Everything else is irrelevant fluff if you can’t do that one thing properly.
It’s well over time you genuinely listened to feedback and fixed this.
Review from 2023
I fundamentally need this app to do one thing and one thing only - display my live battery percentage on the home page, legibly. On my iPhone SE 2nd gen it now fails to do even this one simple thing. The screen isn’t large enough, so the app compresses the content - by narrowing down the battery percentage and range windows so that the data is only ambiguously visible. This remains one of the most fundamentally bo****ksed up pieces of software I have ever had the misfortune of having to use. I’d give it zero stars if I could. And my earlier criticisms have not been addressed in any update - to wit… I need this app just to monitor my e-bike battery status, and it can’t even do that most fundamental task reliably. The app does not correctly retain battery status data if it doesn’t have the Bluetooth connection to the bike and an internet connection at the same time. I shut the app down, relaunch it, and it shows not the battery status at the last connection, but at the one before! The app errors on launching if there is no internet connection. The app does not store engineering data, so you can only access that with a Bluetooth connection. This is all a real problem if you are trying to manage your bike in a location off-grid, which, as I use a gravel bike in some remote territory (you know - it’s an adventure sport…) I’m rather dependent on. Fails to record route and details
Some routes while appearing to start correctly mysteriously fail to record the trip Some trips miss out totally, others have a straight line gap and others stop mid cycle so a full record of the mileage cycled is not recorded
Is there a reason?
Otherwise app with the L1/L2/L3 pages is miles better than those little coloured circles on the previous app Barrie S
Scott e-bike
Best bit of kit I ever bought
I am now in control of how hard I work on the bike until of course the battery runs out
I link it to my heart rate monitor to set the level I want
I never cycle slow anymore or overtrain it’s a joy
Orbea bike
This bike has been fantastic for my rehab after a hip replacement. It does everything I ask of it and after 3 years we have cycled many hills together. Love my bike .
E scultura
An excellent resource. My heart rate monitor does not always become recognised, which is a pain because of its inconsistency.
I’m never sure if when the battery drops to a certain level, if the output is reduced and by how much ( and at what point) but it does feel the output lowers past a battery level of 10%.
Great app.
This is the best thing on my phone. Instant visibility of everything I want to know about my cycling. Highly recommended.
Record function
I really liked this app but since I have had the latest firmware update, when I press record for the ride, the app then cuts my battery level down to no assist! I have stopped, re-started, deleted and re-installed to no avail. It works great when not recording, showing speed, battery consumption etc - very frustrating having to use Strava etc independently.
Glitchy app
I downloaded the app but I struggled to justify having it on my phone.
1. This morning , it connected to my bike, albeit a little slowly, but then refused to move on to a screen which gave information (e.g. battery power remaining). I gave up.
2. The amount of information available seems limited.
3. I recently tried to get a record of use of the Mahle motor during a ride. I pressed the record ride button but after the ride finished there was no record. Could not work out why not.
4. The worst thing, and what caused me to delete the app, was that I wanted to download a gpx route to a different app. My smart bike launched itself and refused to allow me to access the app I wanted. I could not work out how to bypass it. SO annoying.
Force Mahle from Ebikemotion app
This app changeover resulted in me being unable to use my bike due to a firmware upgrade when I changed over resulting in a flashing pink light 193. Basically fine until I downloaded this app and paired it. Avoid it
