The best dictionary

pabturo on

I cannot give this app higher praise. Offline capability, kanji drawing input, stoke order, example sentences, good connection between different entries (links to kanji’s radicals, words that use that kanji, similar kanji), free. Just amazing.

Good but has flaws

Master Cylinder Pants on

The main problems this app has is 1. It is very difficult to return to the search if you drill down into definitions too deep. 2. The text to speech voices can sound very robotic even when using the “enhanced” versions. 3. The text to speech is sometimes wrong. I think what is happening is the TTS is given the kanji version of a word instead of the kana version. This is an example of an incorrectly pronounced word: にゅうじょう 【入場】

Excellent App!

Billy Long Legs on

This app is excellent! I have been using this app for years now! Nice to see it being well maintained after all these years. Though i do wish it some of that modern touch and feel that most apps have nowadays, but I understand simple design is also good too. One thing i would like to see added is a “Multiple Windows” support for ios. Many times i come across words that use different kanji to another word but at a glance it may look the same (間開聞). I would like to use this feature to do a side by side comparison of these kanjis in order to help with my learning journey. Also this feature will allow for looking up multiple words at the same time increasing productivity. In any case, this is just a personal preference. Thanks for creating/maintaining this app, dev!

This is an absolutely amazing dictionary, with many useful functions. It’s great for study, it’s great for kanji practice. It’s awesome! and the team who made this deserves all the praise and a round of applause. App’s design is minimalistic, yet intuitive and I can’t imagine my work without it. Look up the worlds and then automatically create cards to study those words! Do I need to say more? I highly recommend this to everyone. Love it.

Excellent

Perhaps not for beginners, but once you’re more comfortable with basic Japanese, this app is invaluable. I like that you can type in romaji to search for a word. I also very much like how you can draw out kanji for a search. Conjugations are always helpful and the example sentences help so much as well!

Better than butter

I have struggled with kanji since my childhood since I grew up in the U.S. I went through Casio calculator like kanji translators with keys I couldn’t read. Thank goodness for this app!!! It’s intuitive and works like a charm!!!

Best Japanese Dictionary Ever

nick the 5th on

I've tried many dictionaries for helping me learn Japanese, and this by far is the absolute BEST one I've ever had the pleasure of using. The interface is easy to navigate, the keyboard options and scratchpad make it super easy to search for kanji that you don't know the hiragana for, and the additional lists for hiragana & kanji are sorted in several different ways to make learning these expansive alphabets so much easier. 100/10 I love this app so much!!
