Nixplay Is Now Holding Users Hostage With a Forced Subscription – Avoid This Scam
I bought 3 Nixplay digital frames because they advertised free cloud storage and seamless photo sharing making them a great way to keep my family connected. Now, after selling thousands of units under that promise, Nixplay has pulled a bait-and-switch
Starting April 21st, 2025 existing users will be downgraded unless they pay an annual subscription. Without upgrading, users will lose access to content they’ve already uploaded - meaning if you don’t pay, you can’t fully use the product you already bought.
This feels like a scammy cash grab. If I had known that I would be forced into a subscription just to use my own photos, I would have never purchased their frames. The CEO, Mark Palfreeman, justifies this by blaming “rising costs” and comparing Nixplay to competitors—except those competitors were transparent from the start about requiring a subscription.
Nowhere in their original marketing did they say I’d eventually be forced to pay a yearly fee.
If you’re thinking about buying a Nixplay frame—DON’T. You’re not just buying a product, you’re committing to ongoing fees forever.
STAY AWAY- Turns out Nixplay are scammers!
Over the last few years, I bought myself and family members Nixplay frames due to their “unlimited storage” for photos. Now they just announced a total rug pull, where you have to upgrade to a costly subscription in order for them to host anything but a measly 500mb of free storage. Total disappointment.
Best way to keep the parents happy
Nixplay frames are amazing. So easy to show all the latest family photos to everyone within seconds of taking them. All it takes is a few taps.

Joe was very kind, professional, and helpful in supporting me with my issue, and he was able to resolve the issue in a very timely manner. Thanks, Joe, for your support!

I was having issues with a Nixplay frame that was paired to an old account. JD (tech support) helped with the pairing to my new account. It was complicated and not something I could do on my own. JD was great in getting the problem solved quickly. I really appreciate JD’s great customer service.

I worked with the most dedicated tech guy by the name of Martin for the last few days!!!! Although originally, I was frustrated to not receive a live phone call for assistance, Martin worked hard and efficiently to resolve my concerns by email. Thanks to his precise written instructions and his efforts to restore my faith in NIXPLAY I am now a SUPER HAPPY NIXPLAY Framer! Martin!!!! You did good! I thank you and my 94 year old dad gets to enjoy his family photos once again! Happy New Year!
Skylight is much better
I have Skylight and Nixplay and Skylight is much easier to use. Everyone can upload photos to one shared album— you don’t have to create albums and playlists. Skylight was so easy to set up and have everyone use. I wish we had bought a second Skylight as a gift instead of this.
Could use improvement
Wish list:
1) ability to move individual photos from one playlist to another in one step
2) ability to crop or adjust orientation of photos in app
3) ability to “push” any photo to display immediately
Bug to address
When a photo upload is in progress, clicking "view progress" causes the app to completely close/shut down.
