Description

Personal Zen is a game-based digital therapeutic intended to treat patients 13 years of age and older with mild to severe levels of clinically elevated anxiety or distress and is intended to be used in consultation with your healthcare provider.
Personal Zen’s core therapeutic mechanism of action is a game-based approach to a decades old area of neurocognitive research known as Attention Bias Modification (ABM). Through this proprietary approach to ABM, Personal Zen uses gamification to target neural pathways associated with emotional and attentional patterns that can drive excessive anxiety and distress.
Based on your current levels of anxiety, fatigue and pain, a daily goal of gameplay is recommended (typically between 6 and 12 minutes). Play 4 times a week for at least 4 weeks to see the best results.
You can also access brief, science-backed tools to support your mental health journey including:
- Journaling & mood tracking to help identify feelings and triggers
- Breathing exercises to calm anxiety and improve sleep
- Mindfulness practices
How Does Personal Zen Work?
The human brain is uniquely predisposed to unconscious, sub-second processing of facial expression. Personal Zen uses facial archetypes and gamification to re-train emotional and attentional patterns that can drive persistent feelings of anxiety and distress. Personal Zen’s proprietary game mechanics have been designed and optimized through a decade of neuroscientific research using EEG, neurostimulation, eye tracking, heart rate monitoring and MRI.
Personal Zen has been clinically validated through six randomized controlled clinical trials published in leading peer-reviewed research journals including Clinical Psychological Science, Behavior Research & Therapy, and Biological Psychology.
After 4 weeks of usage, clinical effects have included a 38% reduction in anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory), a 491% reduction in cognitive signs of anxiety (Dot-Probe Task Measure), as well as a statistically significant reduction in the stress hormone cortisol.
How Do I Play Personal Zen?
Start by logging your levels of Anxiety, Fatigue, and Pain. A daily goal of gameplay will be recommended between 6 and 12 minutes. It is recommended that you meet this daily goal 4 days a week for at least 4 weeks. To play Personal Zen, swipe the path left by the friendly sprite (smiling face) after it disappears. A “medallion” will appear, telling you where to focus your attention next. Don’t let the angry sprite divert your focus. Unlock new regions by earning points and increasing your level.

Personal Zen Reviews

Expensive for what it is and doesn’t always work.

I understand the concept off Attention Bias Modification and I’m still in the process of going through the trial period. I’m not sure whether I am going to pay for it. @ $3.49CAD / month ($41.88CAD/year) it seems expensive, unless there is a lot of development work being carried out above and beyond the NIH funding to improve the app. This app was recommended in the book “The Expectation Effect” by David Robson (an editor at New Scientist and BBC Future), so I had very high expectations (no pun intended). I am finding that when I swipe on a line (starting at the sparkles) sometimes I have to swipe 2 or 3 times or more to successfully clear the line, I have seen other people complain of this too. The swiping is hit or miss, the same action works sometimes and not others. This is quite annoying considering it is supposed to reduce stress. I’ve read some of the research and I really want to like this app and its research supported effects. It would be good if the technical swiping issue could be looked at or explained. I would also need to see more updates (the last update was 1 month ago) and added features to justify the price of the app, I would have thought widespread adoption would be the goal. I think this app could be useful to lots of people with some improvements. At the moment I don’t feel completely comfortable recommending it. Happy to re-review and change my comments if the app improves.

Won’t get past welcome screen

I downloaded the latest version on an iPhone 11 and it won’t move past the “Sometimes we get stuck in a cycle of stress…”, which is a bit ironic.

Had the old version of this app for a year but now the new update demands that you pay for a subscription - ie; theres not a single free play option... very very disappointed

Was Free for Years!

Very disappointed! I had the simpler version of this app for years and suddenly with an update it is requesting payment. I understand that certain aspects have been improved and added, but I would have preferred the simpler version for free. Or at least they could have included advertisements instead of payment! I’m already stressed enough with other areas of my life I’m not going to use an app that is supposed to decrease stress while making me worry about finances.

Won’t work after update — got greedy?

After the upgrade, you can’t get into the new app AT ALL without signing up for a paid subscription. Not impressed.

Great app!

Can't turn off notifications

SeaEnterprise on

Keeps giving notifications in my lock screen on my iPhone 4S even though the app is not in the notification center in my settings. Other than that the app does what it says.
