Great Newspaper, but the App Falls Short
I’ve been reading the WSJ almost every day for the past year because it’s a really great newspaper. But please… make the app experience a little better.
Here are a few things I’d like to see improved:
1) Fix the text jumping around when reading articles. Very often, when I’m scrolling through an article, the text jumps up and down—maybe because ads are loading. I have no idea, but it’s very annoying.
2) Make swiping from the left edge of the screen equal the back button. At the moment, it ‘scrolls’ to the previous article, which is not useful at all in my opinion. If I want to read a different article, I’ll go back to the home page and pick a new one. But make going back to the previous page as easy as possible by implementing this ‘left edge swipe’ feature, as basically every other app has universally implemented. (If you want to keep the ‘scrolling between articles’ feature with a swipe that’s more towards the middle of the screen, that’s fine with me.)
3) The app feels slow in general. I’m using an iPhone 11, which is a bit older now, but it shouldn’t struggle to run a news paper app. I don’t know what’s happening in the background but the app often feels laggy.
Also, internet-wise, why do articles only load when I click them? They should start loading as soon as I’m looking at the headline on the home page. Chances are I will click and read the article. There are no downsides here. If, in an edge case, the article hasn’t had the chance to start loading beforehand, it can just load after I click it, as it does right now. If images take up too much memory try making better lower pixel versions. On phones especially, the pixel count can be lowered significantly without a visual loss in quality. You can always load the full quality image later.
I will remember to change this review when this wishlist has been fulfilled. In that case you’ll get the fifth star 😉.
Kind regards,
A potential lifelong WSJ subscriber.
Great articles, low quality editorials
As much as I appreciate the well researched and fact based articles on a wide range of topics, WSJ editorials seem to have been written for people who cannot understand the wealth of analysis provided by these very same articles. They do a disservice to this publication, especially those of the editorial board.
Cumbersom log in
Each time I start the WSJ app from my iPadI need to provide my user name and password, unlike all other paid news apps.
Just great
The Wall Street Journal at your reach - a journal for the cool-headed ....
solid wsj app
user friendly and versatile instrument
My appreciation:
1) Content and quality of the articles: first class.
2) Presentation of content and articles: TERRIBLE AND BORING
I am missing important information due to the fact that the layout of the articles is such that I don’t want to loose time searching what is worth reading and what is not !!!!!!
A few years ago it was much better presented.
Please, change that mess.
Regards,
Michel Eliat-Eliat
Reliable source of news globally
Reliable source for information and open to opinions the owners/editors do disapprove. The WSJ was among my daily set of newspapers when it was delivered via one channel only: the edition on paper, part of my daily morning routine, as of the early 1990-ties when hand delivered every morning at 05:00 am sharp Belgian time (GMT + 1). Now it’s convenient to have it on three devices wherever I go and there is taken care of that it follows my daily schedule wherever I am. Newspapers have become highly competitive multimedia, they must be a beacon of reliably in a world where fact checked truths have become a scarce good; in my experience the WSJ has taken the challenges this entails as an opportunity to offer each reader a well balanced large range of topics from which to make her/his tailored daily information channel. I confirm again an earlier made conclusion: continued consistency in the qualities of :
1)Reliability, 2) open to a broad range of views and 3) strictly on time when and where-ever relevant events take place, delivered wherever I happen to be.
Not liking the redesign
Not liking the redesign. Went from great to plain
