Ulysses: Writing App

Ulysses is a great application, it has all the bells and whistles, but it functions are straight forward and clean. Plus, what a great name for an app.

Logged onto Ulysses on a new device and started writing on a sheet. iCloud backup only backed this sheet up and wiped ALL my work on my other devices. Hundreds of hour of priceless writing a I had built up over several months. Support has been useless and unresponsive. Use at your own risk - you might loose every single word you type into this software.

It day one of downloading this app and it lists full days worth of outlining and writing for my book. The work just ceased to exist. No I will not be putting any more trust in this app.

I’ve been using this app for over a year. It’s confusing to use at times and it doesn’t save and backup items like it guarantees. I’ve lost over 13,000 words for two different stories I started and whenever I try to log in to my account it just says downloading but doesn’t show my content. I’m furious as I didn’t have my stories backed up anywhere else because I thought the whole point of paying for the subscription every month was to ensure my work would have been saved I plan to find another app and back up my stories in multiple places thanks for the painfully expensive lesson that’s all this app was good for.

So many features. Easy to use. Make sure to watch tutorials. I wrote a whole book and didnt even use the revision setting haha

I had Ulysses when it first came out and you just bought it straight up and that was it. Then all of a sudden I am notified that I will have to start paying monthly. Even tho there were no in app purchases at first and then you made a separate app that had a monthly sub and abandoned the one I paid for. Now I get back into writing and I actually liked Ulysses, so I paid for the sub. I started back up with some traction and read the tutorials. Then I get into dividing my groups and filters and run into a problem. For some reason if I create something in one filter, but decide I want to move it to another one, 99% of the time it will only let me move it to a folder that I created it in. Even if I totally erase all evidence of it, start a new filter and paste just the body, it automatically gets sent to pending if it’s not the filter I created it in. IDK why in 2024, as long as I’ve known this product. This is a problem. I should be able to easily drag groups in and out of any filter I want to. So I just gave up. I tried everything. Every menu. Then it crashed. So since I’m still within 7 days. If this isn’t fixed I’ll move one to something that might be a little more user friendly. I use to be able to effectively use this app years ago even with the vague instructions, I could figure it out. But not being able to move folders around and crashing is so 1900s. I really am disappointed this app couldn’t even keep up with my work in the 12 hours I’ve been fighting to get it to work. I just. Don’t get it. And now that I think about it. When I really started going thru the app to figure it out. I saw very little change. It felt like I just DLed the same app from like iPhone 6 or something. Just a few additions, but nothing that justifies years of subs with little change.

I love this app. I love writing, so this is perfect for me. I expected it to be one of those things where you have to pay to do the tiniest thing, but instead, you don’t have to pay anything! It’s a bit complicated at first, but I got the hang of it pretty soon. If you like to write, I totally recommend it!

Numerous iCloud sync issues over the years drove me to using Dropbox. Ulysses on dropbox also had issues - it is continuously duplicating sheets on me, registering conflicts on the same device. Also, only manual backups on Dropbox. Today it threw an error and lost three hours of work on me. There is no platform that just works if you do a large amount of work on multiple devices.

Was my go to writing app, but for the last month or so it has become unusable. It is slow and unresponsive when in the app. It suddenly pops up “ cannot access iCloud Drive!” and all my data disappears. Please fix. I love the app…when it works.

I love this app and wrote a review in support of it. But this last week it’s done nothing but crash, not synch, and scare me to death. Every time I open it it says no notes available. I have to wait for it to download from my cloud. But let me tell you-that’s a scary feeling wondering if I’ll get all 600 pages back. Please fix it…the reason I use this app and not Microsoft was because of the easy upload and display, and because I trusted it would not corrupt or lose my work.
