Waste of time…
I won't say Ulysses was the reason I swapped my old Windows machine for all Macintosh. But if it had been available for Windows, I might not have switched. After all, I already had it on my iPhone, iPad, and iPad Mini. But I simply wanted to round out the final step in my ability to have all my apps work on all my technologies. Not to mention that Ulysses is the best writing app available for iOS and MACOS, bar none.
The Button Row on the iPhone is annoying. It’s a nice try to add easily accessible functionality to a smaller screen but why in the world are formatting tools taking precedence over quick actions? As a writer of any kind the undo, redo and find functions should be first. Not hidden behind a drop down menu. Even in your tutorial it says the search button is on the far left. But it’s not... instead, it is the left and right arrows. I don’t know what you guys did, but something is not right with the button row. It’s obnoxious to use as all the frequently used functions are now behind a drop down menu.
I am now a happy Ulysses user, having left the world of Scrivener for distraction-free writing. Different apps/programs work better for each writer and for me this one works the very best. It is the moment of composition that is key for me and there is no better program out there than Ulysses for making the most of that moment by having the least distracting interface.
You can’t change the justification in the previews so you can’t rearrange stanzas. It formats them as full paragraphs and gives no options which makes it useless for poetry
Intuitive to use and syncs across multiple devices. Highly recommended.
Everything about this app is good except the somewhat cheeseball icon and the animation when files fly away like the butterfly it depicts. Could you please add a blank square to the app icon options? I think a lot of writers look to these apps for neutral space, and the metaphor in the branding is distracting. If you could please change these things or at least make them options that could be turned off, you will have the only app on the store that offers a truly simple blank page. On that note, a last suggestion would be to make the various control icons at the top of the screen hideable in full-screen mode, so that it is nothing but the white page and the words. Anyway, beyond these issues, it's a good app, thank you.
I've been with Ulysses since the start but won't be renewing my subscription. They have taken it upon themselves to just create updates that make all of your writings out of wack - for example fonts size automatically became super large for headings. While this can be changed to "small / medium / Large" it is pretty much their directive to what these sizes mean... and they are actually still too big for me. If you value your writing without an app developer suddenly messing it all up without your consent.. then steer away from this app. I simply don't trust that the next update more things will be out of wack. I've been using it for a few years and have written my last 3 books using U. It makes organizing your thoughts and writing easy.
Ulysses is a sleeper app that has a built in editor and is very simple to write without interruption. I get better text and then edit and move to my end location (or leave in Ulysses). Way under appreciated as a notes and writting app. Update years later - it just helps me write more better heart felt text … other apps drive me crazy. Love it - I am not a pro and ya it cost a few but for me IT WORKS AS MY SPACE TO FLOW 😆👌
