How We Feel is a free app created by scientists, designers, engineers, and therapists to help people better understand their emotions and find strategies to help them navigate their emotions in the moment. Conceived in conjunction with Yale University's Center for Emotional Intelligence and based on the work of Dr Marc Brackett, How We Feel helps people find the right word to describe how they feel while tracking their sleep, exercise, and health trends using HealthKit in order to spot patterns over time.
Founded as a science-based nonprofit, How We Feel is made possible by donations from people who are passionate about bringing mental wellbeing to the widest possible audience. Our data privacy terms are clear and easy-to-understand: all of your data is kept on your device unless you opt-in to send an anonymized version of your check-ins to be used in research to help more people.
Whether you are downloading this app in order to build better relationships, make your emotions to work for you, not against you, improve how you handle stress and anxiety or simply to feel better, How We Feel will help you identify patterns through daily HealthKit tracking and find emotional regulation strategies that will work for you. The How We Feel friends feature allows you to share how you feel with the people you trust most in real time, strengthening your most important relationships.
Filled with step-by-step video strategies you can do in as little as one minute on themes like "Change Your Thinking" to help you address negative thought patterns with cognitive strategies; "Move Your Body" to express and release emotions through movement strategies;"Be Mindful" to gain perspective and minimize the negative impact of misunderstood emotions with mindfulness strategies; "Reach Out" to build intimacy and trust, two important tools for emotional wellbeing, with social strategies.

Game Changer
I honestly never leave reviews, but not only is this app free which is uncommon nowadays, but the amount of tools and the interface make it something I use daily. It’s made a positive difference in my mental health, it’s helped me with addiction, and I tell everyone I know about it.
Essential to have!
This app has helped me so much with recognising my different emotions and regulating them. As well as regular check ins, it also includes sound patterns, breathing techniques, quotes and so much more (whilst being free to use!!!!). i couldn’t recommend this app enough
Superb
A wonderful little app that’s so important in this age. We’re always rushing around to be productive but not taking the time to listen to our emotions, this app helps you track your feelings, teaches you to describe them and shows you patterns you might have not been aware of!
Needs Apple Watch app to be perfect
I love this app and how it works. The visuals are beautiful and the range of emotions are unmatched on any other app.
The ONLY thing it’s missing is being able to record my feelings on my Apple Watch. I’d respond much more often and get better records if I could do it on my wrist! Please consider this feature as it would make the app easier to use and also would be useful for children and young people who only have a smart watch, but would benefit from this app.
Effective way to reflect and notice thoughts and feelings
I really like this - simple to use, colour coded to clearly see change in mood states, and opportunity to log more detail, and see that things change constantly and don’t stay the same, therefore stay optimistic.
Hi
Very good to check your emotions and understand your feelings to keep calm love the tools❤️🦜😎
Amazing tools and resources
Easy guide for learning how to process emotions and challenges
unusable
I loved this app and used it for months on end, building up over 3GB of documents and data according to apple, but now it’s at the point where the app crashes whenever i try and open it and i don’t want to lose my entries but there’s no point in having them if i can’t access them.
1000/10
Genuinely such an outstanding app, for both neurodivergent and neurotypical people. Ability to sync with health data, tools to help manage emotions, fascinating emotions insight. On top of this it’s completely free and has no ads so it is completely immersive and calm with no pay walls. Everyone should have this app I literally can’t stop thinking of reasons why this app is so amazing !!! Looking forward to future updates !
Science based? Really?
Interestingly, they have put as emotions some words that are definitely *not* emotions,
Recommended, if you choose any of the following, you can also pick another word that is actually an emotion!!
None of these are emotions but are options in the app:
physical sensations:
exhausted, alive, energised, poised, relaxed, burned out, fatigued, fragile, spent, tired, discomfort, restless, Strained, tense
intellectual descriptions:
gaslit, absorbed, accomplished, alert, attentive, challenged, confident, curious, determined, eager, engaged, engrossed, fascinated, interested, productive, accepted, pensive, cancelled, disconnected, disengaged, disillusioned, excluded, inadequate, indifferent, invalidated, isolated, judged, let down, turned off, concerned, confused, nauseated, nervous, pressured
general descriptions:
jilted, empowered, affectionate, at ease, appreciated, balanced, carefree, chill, comfortable, connected, empathetic, even-tempered, fulfilled, good, included, heard, loving, mellow, moved, respected, safe, secure, supportive, sympathetic, understood, validated, valued, tenderness, ghosted, meh, minimised, numb, fomo, hyper, scorn, overwhelm, taken aback, uneasy
They even have strange descriptions of these “emotions” that show the app creators realise they’re not quite emotions.
They put an explanation of “taken aback” as “surprised by something unpleasant or offensive” which is not strictly its real definition (you can be taken aback by something that is not unpleasant or offensive either) and you can see how the emotion word is “surprised.”
To take another example to expound on why these are not emotions. Someone could feel “gaslit” and be angry, or be scared, terrified, sad etc. when such a general descriptor is used in place of an actual emotion word, we are not helping anyone to develop their emotional self-awareness.
I’m not surprised that people have difficulty naming their emotions when products like these confuse people further.
And if this is science-based, well, we have a long way to go.
