The app and Athletic overall have been going downhill since the NY Times acquisition. I already had a NYT account and it won't let me connect the two. As a result, if I try to open an Athletic article outside the app (like from Facebook), it says my NYT account doesn't allow access. Someone from technical support was supposed to fix it, but that was weeks ago.
Now, this most recent update, has a bug where you cannot put the teams you follow in the order you want. It defaults to NFL and MLB teams first. Every time I bring the WNBA to the front of my followed teams, it immediately drops it back to the default order.
Intrusive yet useless advertising
The upper half of the front page is recently filled with an ad to subscribe to the Athletic. However, I am already subscribed, as a pop up informs me when I click the x to close the ad. Then the ad returns the next time I load the app. DEVELOPERS: This should be trivial to fix, please do it.
Unlike on a web browser, I can’t pinch to zoom embedded photographs. The photo popups are zoomable but it’s annoying to open them and they are hard to close. Probably not easy to fix but worse than the website.
Since the Auth system doesn’t work for me on the website I’m forced to use this app.
Bad team coverage since being sold.
Besides the app not allowing you to delete your credit card information, the coverage for the team I follow has not been very good. There used to be one person covering my team. Now that same person covers 3 teams. I will be canceling my subscription when it comes up for renewel.

But the Athletic fired all of them. Then they billed me $72/yr even though I never intended to renew after the first year. Asked them for a refund, at least for the $72 they got me for last week and just got a rude form letter instead of actual customer service. Avoid this company.
