The Athletic: Football News

Ever since NY Times bought it and added ads the clickbait has increased and the app now is more interested in you seeing as many articles and ads as possible instead of its initial focus on high quality content.

I’ve been subscribing to The Athletic since their first year. It was once great. I mean REALLY great. Over the past couple of years it has devolved into sanctimonious and condescending lectures from virtue signalling writers. “Writers” not “journalists”. I just want to enjoy sports. I don’t need the New York Times inserting their leftist propaganda into every article. If you don’t genuflect to the groupthink in the Comments section you will be banned from commenting for life. There are still a few really good writers and that’s why I still subscribe, but I can’t take much more of this garbage. This may be my last year of subscribing.

Desperately trying to cancel the subscription. Almost impossible to complete. absolutely no one to contact to help me out with this. Terrible.

not sure why it’s called “The Athletic: Football News” when all sports are encompassed (can’t it be called “The Athletic: Sports News” or “The Athletic?”). also, it keeps telling me my log-in info is wrong even though it’s 1000% correct, and the “Forgot password?” link just returns to the same log-in screen, not a password reset screen. No log-in problems when accessing via web browser (and entering the exact same email/pw), though.

App is excellent for what it is. Provides scores, analysis, and live blogging threads in an easy to navigate manner. There is also podcast player but I don’t use that feature. Main issue is that as of two days ago the teams/leagues/writers that I follow and which appear in the top heading of the home page now has set itself to some order which I can NOT edit. I used to have it customised by interest, with the most relevant teams/leagues appearing first. Now it immediately resets the order as soon as I edit it. I’ve tried reinstalling , logging in and out etc. but the app just reverts the order in realtime. This may seem small but given how much content is available on the app, it is quite annoying to have to scroll so far to find what is my most commonly clicked on teams/leagues.

I am extremely disappointed that the app just spoiled a major event for me. Why is there not an option to avoid that from happening. Brutal.

They make it extremely difficult to cancel your subscription with instructions that dont exist within the app. Ridiculous.

Every morning, it's nice to have a multitude of good journalists who offer us incredible articles on all sports. It's easy to keep up with our stars, NHL, MLB, NBA, Soccer, PWHL. If you want a good morning paper, The Athlectic Rock

In July of 2023 I renewed my subscription to the Athletic but this time I bought my subscription through the NY Times which gives me the Athletic for free. In the past week or so I renewed for another year, even though my last subscription had not expired yet. 2 stories in the last week did not let me read the article until I “became a subscriber.” When I logged into the site no problem reading the articles. What is the point of having the app if I need to log in to gain access. Any chance someone can fix this? It is very frustrating!

I enjoy the Athletic so much it is the only subscription I have. The problem is that when you are scrolling on your phone every time your finger gets near an ad you jump from the app to the ad in your browser. You then have to close off the ad and go back to the app. When it happens five times in an article you get frustrated.
