The comment section has no moderators
The news stories about European football are often late. There is one thing in particular that bothers me enormously as a subscriber: the comment section. Haters gonna hate, people say — and it is indeed the rule in The Athletic’s news comment section. The exception is comment moderation. It should be abolished. The amount of trolling, especially in stories about FC Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United, is outrageous. Dozens of subscribers like me have been complaining about a user called Juan Jose P., who keeps trolling every single story about Barcelona, spreading false information and inflaming the comment section. When we respond or complain, we get “our comments under moderator review”. The app’s curatorial record in the news comment section is deplorable. If moderation isn’t to protect writers and readers, why the hell you guys have comments section in the app?
