Description

Pleco is the ultimate Chinese learning companion: an integrated dictionary / document reader / flashcard system with fullscreen handwriting input and live OCR, from a company that's been making the world's best mobile Chinese learning apps since 2001.

Major features: ($ = paid add-on)

• Amazing dictionaries. We offer two free built-in dictionaries: the popular open-source CC-CEDICT, with over 110,000 frequently-updated entries, and our own PLC dictionary, with 125,000 entries, parts of speech, and over 25,000 example sentences (with Pinyin). More than two dozen other dictionaries are available as free and paid ($) add-ons, including licensed titles from well-known publishers like Oxford, Longman, FLTRP, Tuttle, SLPH, and Commercial Press.

• Powerful merged search: look up words by Chinese characters, Pinyin (spaces / tones optional), or English, with support for wildcards and full-text search. And no need to tediously flip between all of those dictionaries to find a word - just type in your search term and instantly get a combined, frequency-sorted result list.

• Links and cross-references: easily look up character components, break down words into individual characters, look up lists of words containing a particular character, and search across all dictionaries for example sentences containing a word.

• Gorgeous typography: see it for yourself in our screenshots - we think we're one of the best-looking Chinese dictionaries around. Alternate Kai/Song/Xing-style Chinese fonts are also available ($).

• PRC/HK/Taiwan-friendly: every part of Pleco supports both traditional and simplified, headword readings can be shown in Pinyin and Zhuyin, and some dictionaries even support Cantonese. (note: stroke order diagrams do support traditional characters, but use PRC order)

• Audio: Hear Mandarin and Cantonese for words and example sentences using iOS' free built-in text-to-speech system. We also offer add-ons ($) with native-speaker Mandarin recordings and higher-quality Mandarin TTS.

• Document Reader: bring in text from the clipboard and tap on words in it to instantly look them up. Upgrade ($) adds support for tap-lookups in text, HTML, DOC, DOCX, PDF, and EPUB files. We also offer graded readings ($).

• OCR: look up words simply by pointing your device's camera at them, or by tapping on them in a still image. ($)

• Fullscreen handwriting: use your device's whole screen instead of just a little box. Extremely accurate and highly tolerant of stroke order mistakes. (enhanced $)

• Flashcards: create a card from any dictionary entry with a single button tap, import premade word lists, use advanced memorization techniques like SRS, and study in a variety of modes including fill-in-the-blanks handwriting and tone drills. ($)

• Stroke Order Diagrams: animations showing you how to draw each character; 500 characters for free, 28,000 in paid ($) version.

• User dictionaries: create new dictionary entries right on your device as you encounter new words. ($)

• No ads.

As a Mandarin teacher this is the app I recommend all students get familiar with right away! There are just so many amazing things about it I cannot list them all here but generally speaking, however good someone thinks Pleco is, it’s actually better. So so grateful for this, keep up the good work and remember ‘work is love made visible’ (Khalil Gibran)

Google translate>> Pleco

Pleco stinks more than the fish it is named after. Schools should allow me to use google translate instead of this goofy ahh app

Hands-down, the best

Caveat emptor! on

Pleco is hands-down the best digital tool for learning Chinese. I’d be lost without it.

Good app but…

kid bout to start gsces on

wish the search could be changed to focus less on random historical figures (which clutter up results) instead of useful words

So glad I discovered this for learning Chinese

When I installed this app a few months ago, I didn’t expect to be using it that much as I had only started learning Chinese as a hobby, via another app, and the interface seemed rather utilitarian. But, several dictionary and graded reader purchases later, I’m a total fan and use it every day. Here are the features I really like: - the flash cards. At first I added words into the default list and never looked at them again. But I’ve since organised them into categories and use them to test myself every day. - the enhanced text to speech audio, which I paid for, is fantastic. I set the narration speed to 80%, which allows me to actually pick out some words. - the break-through graded readers! Boy, the authors did a great job at making these stories interesting, despite the limited vocabulary. I ended up buying and reading them all, and am now reading the Secret Garden, which is the next level up. If not for the readers, I can’t imagine I’d still be even studying Chinese, as I’m otherwise limited to the signs of take-away shops. - the myriad dictionaries. For a while, I was content with the free dictionaries the app comes with, but I’ve since bought most of the other general-purpose ones and find it helpful to be able to look at a variety of definitions for a given word or phrase, as well as sample sentences. I also like how they break the character down into its radical and components. I must also commend the performance of the app, as the other app I use, which was good enough to get me going, crashes repeatedly. Pleco was right to go with utilitarian over cutesy anime, I guess. The only thing I’d wish for, if it were possible, would be if the text narration could continue in the background (meaning, with my phone in my pocket). But, that is a very trivial wish on my part.

Awesome app

Madgey 5 on

Very streamlined interface and easy to find what you need. I love that it doesn’t just translate pinyin, characters and English words but also gives you the stroke order AND pronounciation of characters. Also the extra features like bookmarking and giving examples or using the words in the sentence. It has everything I ever needed. Makes my Chinese study much quicker and easier.

As a student, this is the best resource

There is no more accurate source of vocab info than this app. It has everything you’ll ever need to know, and more. I can’t recommend it more.
