As bad as a crash can go
Today, this app crashed so badly, no way to fix what was wrong. I finally managed to delete everything, download again app and the issues. It yet read. That never ever happened to me on iPad or iPhone.
As soon as you are offline, the app has his hiccups.
Slow and laggy
While The Economist App delivers excellent content, its performance on my iPhone 13 is disappointing. The app is often slow and laggy, even with downloaded editions. Additionally, the "Manage Privacy" screen appears monthly, disrupting the reading experience. I hope the developers address these issues for a smoother, more user-friendly experience.
Utterly disappointing
I’m a ling term subscriber of your magazine and have enjoyed the audio version since it was a weekly download.
However I am deeply disappointed by your app.
It takes long to load and when finally it shows its homepage it takes ages to react to any pressing of a button.
It crashes often, irrespective of whether you’re simply reading an article or waiting for the app to respond to a pressed button.
The audio is unstable, crashes often and there is only very limited functionality to control the queue.
I sincerely hope you can fix these bugs, they are very annoying making reading or listening to your excellent articles a truly disappointing experience.
Heavy and unstable
To display text and image requires little ressources and CPU power. Why is my phone becoming hot and my screen freezing while accessing this great content?
Unreliable downloads
The low reviews does not relate to the journalistic content, which I like, but the unreliable implementation of the app. Downloaded editions regularly have images missing and left blank. But more annoyingly, when reading a _downloaded_ edition on a weak internet connection, opening the downloaded articles in it (primarily due to ads and images) is extremely slow and laggy. And when a connection is established or interrupted, it forgets the last page one was at and jumps back to a random place in the issue. Basically, when reading weekly editions, one has to make sure there is no internet connection, which in turn is annoying when one wants to look up things mentioned in articles – which is to me the sole reason to read it on an iPad rather than in print.
Good, but important drawbacks
This is a review for the iPad version of the app. I generally enjoy reading The Economist on the iPad, but two drawbacks are important enough to merit a downgrade of one star for each.
1. The app is horribly slow. My iPad is not the most recent (an iPad Pro from 2018); still the app is noticeably slower than any other app I have, to the point that I sometimes have to wonder whether it has registered a tap at all, for such simple use cases as saving an article to my reading list.
2. I have not found a way to enable proper offline reading. I can download the audio, but whenever I am on a plane and offline, none of the graphics are available. This is especially annoying for charts, without which articles are missing crucial information.
Best Newspaper - Worst App
One could almost think when impatiently waiting for the app to crash over and over again, that the Economist abuses it‘s monopolistic position in excellent journalism
Slow and not synced with different devices
The app got super slow in the last few months, you need to think twice before you click on an article of graph. It will take a few secs to get there or come back.
Also, in the past I used to have my difference devices synced. If I save an article to read later in the iPad or have read the article already, I used to see the same thing in the app in my cell. Not anymore. The apps in the different devices are totally independent as if I were a different user.
Awful app, decreasing value
Horrible navigation, frustratingly slow and crashes regularly. As if not bad enough, it‘s full of ads between and inside articles. What‘s the point of paying increasingly high yearly subscriptions if you‘re not even spared advertisements? I am glad I discontinued my subscription, even the journalistic value is by far not as high as it once used to be, and it keeps decreasing day by day.
Don’t let you cancel costly subscription
Super frustrated with trying to en a multi-year subscription that is completely overpriced! Don’t subscribe, you’ll regret it!
