tl;dr Don’t buy a dashcam from Nextbase. None of their accompanying apps, required for effective use, is remotely functional.
This is a painful piece of software, connectivity with the 522GW is patchy and accessing files is virtually impossible. All OS, firmware and software are the most recent versions.
The app loads. It eventually connects. But I have to wait so long for the files I want to access to become available ('Playback Failed. This file can not be played back at this time. Please download it to your phone and try again’) that the dash cam times out, shuts down and then you have to start the whole process again. The WiFi timing out is a regular occurrence and unrelated to app inactivity.
The responsiveness of the user interface on the app is appalling. It is so slow/unresponsive as to be borderline useless.
If you want a dash cam the 522GW is fine. If you want to be able to access the files, on the basis of this app (and the desktop app which is so bad it doesn’t even load) avoid Nextbase and look elsewhere. I wish I’d read these reviews first - I’d have chosen a different brand.
Never works
Terrible app. It very rarely works. Very disappointing.
App just does not work
522 camera itself is great. Except the crash detection is useless as every time I close the van door (dozens of times a day) it thinks I’ve been bumped. Had to turn it off in the end.
The main issue, and this is a huge one… is the app. It initially connected but no more. It’s incredibly frustrating and I won’t buy a nextbase again. I end up videoing the dashcam screen with my iphone🤷🏻♂️.
Nextbase- Please don’t reply, I’ve been through your trouble solving endlessly. Your kit isn’t cheap. Just please make an app that works!!

Yet again have gone to connect my 622GW to the Nextbase app only to find I have had to delete the app and reinstall it to get the app to work
Not impressed
So i had high hopes for this as its a significant upgrade to my last nextbase dash cam, only to realise it cant be used at the same time as apple car play. Ive just been on some nextbase forums and discovered this has bene an issue since at least 2019 and its not be rectified.
Will there be a solution or am i returning this dashcam?
Great dash cam-completely useless app!
I love my dash 522GW (fwd and rear)but the app is completely useless!! It very rarely connects to the dashcam and if it does, I can’t view files. Soooooo infuriating 😤 Nextbase, you have so many reviews like mine, pleeeeease hurry up and sort these issues!!!!
The worst App I have on my iPhone
I rarely write reviews unless they are for exceptionally good or exceptionally poor products. The Nextbase app falls into the category of exceptionally poor camp.
Poor screen design with 50% of the viewable area taken up with adverts and promotions, colour choices with lack of contrast.
50/50 chance of a blank screen on startup requiring deletion and reinstall of app to have connectivity with Dashcam
Connectivity on WiFi and Bluetooth unable to operate with cars equipped with BMW Connected Drive. The Dashcam has to be taken out of the car and out of range of the car WiFi before video files can be downloaded.
In summary, a reasonable Dashcam (only reasonable because on a long journey it can overheat and stop working in a mildly warm British Spring) let down by an unusable iPhone App
This app is a mess
I don’t know how they’ve managed to write software this bad in this day and age.
The ui is a mess. The connectivity and functionality is painful. It’s obvious the kind of dumb coding that goes on. For example when connecting to the camera’s WiFi. There obviously issuing a request and waiting 10, 20, whatever seconds for it to time out. They’re not picking up the event if it completes sooner.
This pattern is repeated throughout the app. The main thing you’d use the app for is to download photos or videos. And for that, it’s borderline useless.
It hasn’t got better over the last couple of years either. Wish I’d purchased a different brand now.
