Industry Leading Security Features
Messages are stored on Proton Mail servers using end-to-end encryption at all times and are transmitted securely between Proton servers and user devices. This largely eliminates the risk of message interception.
Zero Access to Your Email Content
Proton Mail's zero access architecture means that your data is encrypted in a way that makes it inaccessible to us. Data is encrypted on the client side using an encryption key that Proton does not have access to. This means we don't have the technical ability to decrypt your messages.
Open-Source Cryptography
Proton Mail's open-source software has been thoroughly vetted by security experts from around the world to ensure the highest levels of protection. Proton Mail only uses secure implementations of AES, RSA, along with OpenPGP, while all of the cryptographic libraries used are open source. By using open-source libraries, Proton Mail can guarantee that the encryption algorithms used do not have clandestinely built-in back doors.
Proton Mail in the press:
“Proton Mail is a Gmail-like email system which uses end-to-end encryption, making it impossible for outside parties to monitor.” Forbes
“A new email service being developed by a group who met at MIT and CERN promises to bring secure, encrypted email to the masses and keep sensitive information away from prying eyes.” Huffington Post

Proton Mail Reviews

App functionality limited

Reveewer on

United Kingdom

The mail app is limited by basic features not being available. You cannot select multiple emails for bulk actions like “mark read” or “delete”. The “All Mail” and “Inbox” are separate and the “All Mail” folder is therefore not the default - so notifications do not work if you have filters moving mail into folders from the inbox when it is received. Filters become necessary if you have multiple email addresses and limited features to manage your inbox.

Secure but…..

Tyma7 on

I have used the paid version for ages and will go on doing so. However I wish the team were quicker dealing with known issues. For example it has been difficult attaching photos or files for ages but nothing has yet done about it. It is also impossible reducing file size. That said the security and lack of tracking makes this app invaluable.

Never going back

Skonyx on

Me and my family have been ride or die proton users. My dad put me on the company when he learnt about their ethos. We value our privacy and with Proton mail and Proton VPN, I don’t have to worry about any of my personal data being leaked. They’ve been making advancements over the years and it just keeps getting better. I also love that it can be used for personal and business use. As a business owner, I find it super easy to organise my important emails in folders and schedule emails. I’ve never had any issues with the service, never experienced any technical difficulties and if I ever did they have a operations webpage where you can see live updates of anything going wrong with a full history of previous issues.

The Proton Mail app on my iPhone 13 Mini enables me to manage my email wherever I am, whenever I want. Great app, and getting better!

no longer works on my ipad

Never had problems with this until 3 months ago when it stopped showing new emails. It does notify of them, but the Inbox does not have them. I’ve deleted and reinstalled… the problem remains.

Buggy app - Lazy developers

Mr Fleximilian on

United Kingdom

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea and purpose of this mail client which promotes privacy and security. However, the app is a total disaster regarding how buggy it is! Each and every update introduces new bugs, and when I finally had enough of it and decided writing a detailed report in order for it to be fixed, I got into a loop of a 3 week long discussion with the developers explaining the same thing and them asking me for more information, instead of doing their job and fixing the app already!! I guess they would have asked me to write the code myself and send it over if this kept on going! Terrible experience! Use the web version instead!

Disappointing and no support

psychiccustard on

United Kingdom

So secure even the user can’t get in. Be aware that updates and phone changes might prevent you from accessing your email. Attempts at contacting support are met with silence. This should be an amazing, secure email and app. It would be if support would actually make contact with their customers. Absolutely disappointing.

I like the app, however…

Terrible Mr T on

If you’ve subscribed through the App Store there is no way to take advantage of Black Friday (or seemingly other) discounts. Now, I do really like Proton’s products, and I’m totally behind any company which proactively protects users privacy. But it has irritated me that I’ve been excluded from these savings (nothings getting cheaper out here). They may want to rethink penalising loyal customers who actually want to give them more money.

Doesn't value current customers

Cornish Carrot cruncher on

United Kingdom

I thought I'd check out to see what Black Friday deals are on see if I can get an extension on the current plan that I've got because I'm already a customer oh no there's no value deals for current customers from this company I'm gonna be looking for a different provider in the future when my plan runs out I won't be renewing this company just doesn't value its current customer, why on earth wouldn't you offer a deal to customers that you've already got no reward for a current customers is just so bad. Not only is the actual App bad in terms of the fact that you can only select 50 emails at a time to delete but the whole thing just seems to be not a very well thought out company, this is what happens when you get academics trying to do custom service 😂😂😂

Irritating after update

Niko8pl on

United Kingdom

My god, it’s so annoying that every image is pasted in text area instead of attachment, the app is also not refreshing fast enough sometimes take u 15 mins to respond to an email because of that.
