Description

Vinegar is a Safari extension that replaces the YouTube player with a minimal HTML video tag.
It removes ads, restores picture-in-picture, and allows videos to play in the background when set to audio-only quality.
Note: The phrase 'can read and alter webpages' in the permissions section is just an unfortunate choice of words. Vinegar needs access to the webpage to find the YouTube player and replace it. It's not doing anything creepy!
(Also, do check out Vinegar's companion app, Baking Soda. It's essentially a less powerful version of Vinegar, but it works on all websites except YouTube.)

Legit best app of all time

The best

To the developer: Thank you for keeping this app consistently updated with bug fixes and new features. This app shines! Update 2024: Vinegar extract + AdGuard work so well together.

Great with only some slight annoyances

Vinegar works great and provides a great alternative to YouTube’s absolutely insane and consumer unfriendly premium prices. The only real complaint I have with Vinegar is that if a video is buffering you often times cannot change the quality until the video loads which can sometimes cause a limbo state if your connection is poor at the time.

Broken

Chrome PIP doesnt work for youtube.

Do not buy

App no longer works. No difference from running YouTube on any mobile browser with ad blocker. Ads are not skipped or silenced. Toolbar not working. Nothing. Do not buy.

Need an update, cant select video quality and subtitles are gone

Desperately need an update, it’s been months…

Great idea, a few dealbreakers

1. Video playback is limited to 2x speed. Going faster breaks it. 2. Honestly, the default youtube player bar is much better than this. The app fixes a problem, but create a new one

No longer works

Worth every penny

This extension works beautifully on my phone and my Mac. It works exactly as the developer describes, replacing the proprietary video player on YouTube with the browser / operating system player. It’s so nice. I bought it as part of the vinegar bundle and would definitely recommend it to anyone
