Cheating customers
In my experience Hostelworld is not an honest or serious company. This is not the first time I have been cheated by Hostelworld. Since they don’t have a real customer service, they know they can behave as badly as the like because very often customers don’t follow through and just give up.
I made a reservation through Hostelworld at the Trendy hostel in Paris. Booking was for 12 nights and I paid full amount in advance.
At the time of check in at the Trendy hostel I realized that place was really filthy, unhygienic and unsafe. Everything they claimed at the Hostelworld platform was false and a lie. I refused to check in and start looking for another hostel to stay. I found another place and payed full amount once more.
I demanded full return the money I paid for 12 nights for Trendy Hostel. They said that Hostelworld will handle the return. Trendy hostel then send me mail stating that I did not show up for check in and there will be no return. That’s a complete lie. I did show up, I talk to the guy who was incharge, I looked around and he showed me around.
Hostelworld then say it’s a Kate cancellation so there will be no return. Again a lie. I refused to check in because place was filthy and unsafe. Hostelworld should not have such place at their platform but Hostelworld say they don’t visit or inquire the hostels. They simply collect money and don’t care what happens to the customers.
I am going to file a formal complaint to the French police, to the health authorities and to the customers ombudsman in the EU.
missing a broader area search
I really wish it was possible to search broader areas and not just specific places when looking for hostels. This would be helpful when you’re staying in smaller places.

amazing but should change notifications titles
i love the app and chat possibilities!! But when i get a notification it just says hostelworld and who sent it, doesn't mention what chat it's from. Especially annoying when you're part of five different groups in different countries. It should say from what country/city the message is
Unreliable information
Information pages for hostels doesn’t seem to be updated after the pandemic. Call the hostel before you book. You’re welcome.

Great app with logical UI and an all-around experience.
My instance of the app however is down with a glitch. 9/10 times when I open it, it crashes instantly.
Keep doing it for about 5 tries however and it works just fine.

Gillar verkligen layouten och hur enkelt det är att få överblick var de olika boendena ligger och hur mycket de kostar. Ogillar verkligen att man inte kan manuellt ställa in språk, utan den går efter vilket språk man har inställt på telefonen. Flera saker står på riktigt dålig maskinöversättning, annat på norska. Det går för det mesta förstå vad som menas, men det kan vara riktigt otydligt.
Great when it works!
They will gladly take your money for booking and not have any responsibility if you’ll be standing in the streets with no room for the night.
Has worked well before, but unfortunately when things don’t go as planned they refuse to help.
Our flight was delayed and we contacted our hostel that claimed we could not arrive later than a certain time because of their booking system resets. We asked them to help us hold the room for us but they said we needed to arrive before a certain time. We contacted HostelWorld since we would arrive in the middle of the night to maybe hope they could help us with another booking. They assured us our booking would be valid if we had I formed them of our late arrival. Surprise, it was NOT (even though we arrived before the time they mentioned!) and we had to walk with our luggage in the middle of the night to stay in a hotel more than twice the price.
Once we contacted customer service afterwards for a refund they claimed we should’ve notified the hostel more than 48 hours ahead of our late arrival (but then we did not know our flight would be late so that is impossible). Also, their staff gave us the wrong information when she assured us the booking is valid through them - it is not!
