YNAB FAQ
Is YNAB free?
Yes, YNAB is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is YNAB legit?
🤔 The YNAB app's quality is mixed. Some users are satisfied, while others report issues. Consider reading individual reviews for more context.
I don’t love some of the recent updates and think they take away functionality instead of adding to it. But it is still a great app.
There is one thing that keeps me from recommending it to other people, though, because it would be very confusing for a non-mathy person.
There have been instances where the app automatically reallocates money to another category and you don’t know what happened or where the money came from. Mostly from one month to the next. For example: I understand the concept of not overspending, but there are times when I need a category to be temporarily red to remind me someone is paying me back. If you have 10k in your account, but one category is short $400, you clearly have enough to cover that amount. But somehow when you go on to the next month, it shows the “ready to assign” as something like -102.86. How do you explain this to a new user?
There should be a step in between months that allows us to either “accept” the previous month’s accounting, or “accept” whatever is happening to get to -102.86, WITH an explanation of the money moves. I can’t imagine that ya’ll don’t get a ton of questions trying to help people figure out what the heck happened.
I’m a grown adult. If I want a category red for a minute because it helps me keep track, I shouldn’t HAVE to automatically accept some random accounting that I can’t even explain. I get the concept YNAB is trying to promote, but there are better ways to do this.
The Best Customer Care I Have Ever Experienced
YNAB is a wonderful budgeting tool, but not everything is intuitive. I had been using it incorrectly (assigning income as a category rather than to READY TO ASSIGN). After asking for help and several exmai exchanges, Bian (the customer service rep) sent me an extended video he recorded that showed me how to correct all the mistakes I had made in setting up my accounts.
Now I am finally making full use of this powerful budgeting application.
Changed my life
This is *the* single best app I’ve ever spent money on - completely changed my relationship with my finances and allowed me to finally get on top of everything and plan for the future. There’s a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Thank you *so* much to the developer and the entire YNAB team ❤️👏❤️
The only budget app that worked for me
I have tried them all and this is the only app that truly helped me stick to responsible spending habits. The YNAB method works and the cost is worth it! One request I have is to add divide and multiply operators to the transaction entry screen. Other than that keep up the great work and I look forward to the future updates.
2 years credit card interest free
This app does exactly what I need. Easy to use and I am coming up o. Two years of no credit card interest thanks to YNAB
My favorite budgeting App!!
Took me quite a while to get used to the app. I had to do a lot of fresh starts but fast forward today, it’s very easy to use and really freeing when use YNABs methodology and ways of thinking about money. I think I have had to for about a year now!
Bring back the previous UI
Have been a YNAB user for well over 10 years. For the past few years the quality of the user experience has become more refined. However, the visual treatments applied in this latest update is a significant step back the overall UI. Fonts are smaller, yet there are far more instances of ellipses where the layout no longer supports relatively short text. Contrast in dark mode is worse (magenta or deep blue on black background for overspent categories as an example). The previous UI/UX was a delight. This latest iteration makes me loathe to use the app at all on my phone. I sure hope the web app doesn’t suffer the same fate.
A Review that’s Deserving
I like to think I’m an average Joe that just likes to mind his business and focus on what’s important to me. I never had an app that I felt deserved me writing a review but YNAB honestly changed that perspective. This is my FIRST ever review written and it is well deserved.
YNAB is truly the best and most impactful app I have on my phone. The value it offers is truly worth it. As mentioned from others, it takes some time and putting some work in understanding until you can really take full use of it, but if financial improvement is important to you, that homework is sooo worth it. The functionality and customer support is everything I needed. YNAB is a 10 out of 5 in my book.
Absolute Love!
While some things take tweaks to make fit my needs, I’ve figured out this app and love it!
Update rocks!
Love the new update! This app is a true budgeting app. There’s definitely a learning curve, but they have great videos on YouTube to help explain how the system works. 10/10!
