YNAB FAQ
Is YNAB free?
Yes, YNAB is completely free and it doesn't have any in-app purchases or subscriptions.
Is YNAB legit?
⚠️ The YNAB app has poor ratings and negative feedback. Users seem unsatisfied with its performance or features.
I love YNAB but it has become so confusing and challenging, especially with moving money. I’m not sure how to explain it but overall the app feels less intuitive with each update. I want to stay with YNAB but I’m considering alternatives now 💔
Core Functionality; Poor Design Updates
The app meets expectations for the core functionality but the recent questionable design choices like removing the ability to select multiple transactions from the accounts view by default is unfortunate.
I use YNAB because it’s logistically heavy, not to have yet another incredibly flat, overly minimal experience at the cost my ability to work through the app efficiently.
Definitely doesn’t bode well for the future of this app when the design team starts making choices like this.
Bring back my selection bubbles
I don’t want to have to hit "select" first every time. Also, select is all the way at the top of the screen, making it even more of a pain. I want my selection bubbles on by default like before. I didn't ask for them to be taken away or changed; I used them all the time. It's so frustrating now. 👎👎👎👎
Nobody help in app
I connect bank account and see my amount to assign but in fact I have different amount. Tried to changed but it doesn’t work, there is no options to change assign amount. If I tried to connect with support - chat it just ignoring me and can’t connect with live agent! Horrible
Essential for Finances
This app in my opinion is worth the price for keeping track of your budget. I find it way more enjoyable and easier to keep up with what I spend or how much money I have left then pen and paper or excel..
Bring back the cleared and uncleared
I am still a manual importer. I like to keep the interactions minimal. I don’t want too many additional steps. Why add steps when we could view cleared/uncleared at the top?
The grouping of the accounts into credit and cash took adjusting to, but it has definitely slowed down the speed I take to enter my transactions. I don’t know if the intent of these changes were to keep us more on the app??
Bring back the select option on transactions vs using an additional finger to scroll allll the way to the top. Honestly. Who decided to get rid of these things. I know ynab is not a very exciting product roadmap-wise, but I personally think you guys have done a great job and should only stick to doing things that don’t involve rolling back things that work. Is it really that important to stay busy??
this has forced me to reckon with how this app is too much of a critical piece of how I manage my money. I don’t like it because you guys make awful changes and we just have to tolerate it no matter how many bad reviews you get. Like I’m seriously freaking out now. I know you guys are reading this and chuckling over your coffee. You know you have me.
Good Budgeting, Horrible Update
I’ve been using YNAB for a while now and have found it very helpful up until the most recent update (25.2), which has taken my opinion of the app and the team’s product/development/user experience research processes from 5 stars to 1.
TL;DR Why would the YNAB team remove and hide away some of the most frequently used and important functionality in their app? According to them, all for the sake of “streamlining” the UI, something I’m sure no one ever asked for (it’s a budget! It’s all about having the information you need easily available at once)
Since joining the app has received a few significant updates, some confusing, some pointless, and some just objectively bad, making the app nearly unusable:
• Targets were changed completely. This was very confusing, but eventually kind of made sense
• When moving money/covering overspending, the default option of typing out the money to be used was replaced with a slider. Although this was bundled with the ability to move funds from multiple categories at once, which is nice, why add a slider? Moving money should always be precise, which a slider never is
• Most recently (see other recent reviews), critical features have been removed or hidden away behind multiple taps. The team will argue that this “streamlines” the app, but this would none like removing the time and battery indicator from your phone to “streamline” it. Just because I can see it if I go open the clock app doesn’t mean it isn’t better to just be able to see it at the top by default. I check my cleared balance and manually clear several transactions at once multiple times a day. Why make it harder to use your app for no reason? It truly baffles the mind. And removing the account used from the new transactions screen is just ridiculous; it makes the screen entirely pointless. You really might as well just get rid of that too
Please, please revert these recent changes. Up to this point changes that have been added have been confusing but at least didn’t eliminate/hide base functionality. I can’t imagine that I’ll be able to use YNAB much longer if this continues
1 step forward 5 steps back
The only thing they spend money on is backend, marketing, support, and brainless UI changes. No innovation. Only regressions.
I’m reviewing 1 star every update, every day, until you fix this. The new update has broken functionality and workflows for NO REASON.
User since 2014!
I love the mentality behind this app and the creators. Essentially, let budgeting give you freedom! Whether it’s paying off debt, saving up for a repair, down payment, or trip. YNAB has helped me achieve those goals over the past (13?!?) years.
What sets this app apart from the other budgeting programs?
-very user friendly
-I like the casual language the YNAB team uses in their newsletters and in their resource videos
-I like how YNAB encourages you to be more intentional in your planning and spending tracking. This makes you be more PROACTIVE with your spending rather than reactionary with apps that just track your spending.
With YNAB, I have:
-taken 2 2 week euro backpacking trips on a college budget
-saved up 2 down payments
-set up student loan payoff plan
-given away 5% of my income every year
-had financial peace and getting closer to financial independence
Stop making the app worse please
Let me preface this with, I love this app. I’ve been using daily for well over a year, but recently they’ve been making changes that makes the experience worse. Why did you remove the name of the account the transaction is in when inputting new transactions? Why did you take away the ability to select transactions without having to click a button? Why does that select button reset after you click an action? Why are we iterating on some of the best features and making the experience worse. Please devs don’t let the product team ruin this app.
